iPhone: The modern engagement ring

Posted by neha | Ramblings, Tech | Tuesday 14 August 2007 3:02 pm

You know the scene. You’re at your local dark, urban bar, and there is a pod of people who are crowded around. Is someone engaged? Showing off their 2 carat bling?

Iphone No

Nope, it’s just an iPhone.

As you may know, I enjoy going out on the town to tech parties as much as the next person. However, one thing that I can no longer tolerate is iPhone flashing. I know you have one, and waited in a Star Wars worthy line to get it. I also know that all your facial grease is all over the screen…making it untouchable to me [ya, I am a germ-a-phobe]. I really don’t think any tele (sans Alexander Graham Bell’s original phone) is worthy of so much attention.

By far, male owners of the iPhone are the worst. I grew up in a farming town, where the bigger the truck, the manlier the man. I came to the big city and discovered that it’s not so different. If a guy has an iPhone, he will whip it out to impress you. This usually has the adverse effect on me: it’s a turn off. So fellas, keep the iPhone in the pants!!

I know what you’re thinking. That I have some gadget-psych equivalent to the Electra complex, or I secretly want one. Actually, I am pretty content with my Blackberry Pearl, and have no desire for a makeup wipe of a phone. Do you think it’s worth all the fuss, or agree that it’s a bust? Am I the only person who is overcome with nausea whenever an iPhone commercial is on TV?

I went to the apple store in Palo Alto a week after the iPhone launch to check it out. There were a lot of people there playing with the demos … and it was a total turn off to me. I didn’t want to be part of the Me-too/gotta-see-it vibe that was going on in the store. I ended up looking at everything else is the store except for the iPhone. I like the phone, but some weird part of my brain simply didn’t want to be associated with it at that moment.

I’m sure if I ever get one, it will be a different story.

The husband and I weren’t going to get iPhones, even though we’re total gadget freaks. But we gave in and I’m happy with it. Most of the folks I know aren’t such gadget freaks, so when I do take out the phone, I do garner a bit of notice. But I don’t flash it or anything. That’s just silly. LOL! It would probably be annoying if I knew someone who did such things though. ;)

I’ll admit, i love the sleek sexy design of the iPhone. That said, I’d be much more impressed and eager to get a phone-less version (touchscreen iPod), and leave the email to the bb pearl.

I think the iPhone is a pretty impressive piece of technology. I truly do think that it’s going to open us up to true multimedia mobile communications and we’ll be able to throw these silly “v-cast” type networks to the wayside.

With that said, I also believe that there is way too much hype over this thing. Sure it looks slick and has a nice UI but how much longer before Samsung or Motorola throw their hats into the ring too? My guess it won’t be too long, and when they do, will Steve’s RDF hold up?

    Only time will tell.

I still haven’t seen an iPhone, I live in a small town, and we don’t have an at&t store, or an apple store. But I’m happy with my samsung upstage. And I paid about half the price.

I feel you though, I’m sick of the commercials, and the hype.

Yeah, so I completely agree with you getting turned off by guys whipping out their iPhones. Fortunately for me it doesn’t set me back too far since I’m not gay. But still.

I have a few macs and am a graphic designer- I am not in love with Apple though. And to be honest the iPhone is a cool idea and is setting the standard for cell phones- which was needed badly.

There’s obviously a lot of problems with the Apple phone and although it is a visually appetizing GUI, I think I’ll hold off on buying one. Oh yeah, plus I would rather buy a 28″ LCD Moniter to work on : )

I hear you, I do not know anyone personally with one, but the videos of people at places, or pix it seems like everyone has them, and since so many tech savvy people have them I do not see the point in showing them off anymore since most have it and its been two months. Don’t get me wrong it is a kickass phone and be cool if I had one, but it is only AT&T so I have yet to pick one up, maybe if Apple lets Verizon get the iPhone I might get it, but I will prob get a Windows SmartPhone since I’d probably use the features more, unless I switch to Mac one day.

I’m a guy with an iphone, and I can definitely understand how it would be a turn off for some guy to be flashing it around. The way I figure it, if she’s the type of girl where that’s what it takes to start a conversation with her… then she probably isn’t worth it anyways. Which is why I try and keep the usage discrete (sometimes you do need to legitimately use it, because you can definitely do a lot with it).

Nice site design by the way
