Online dating for Spock fans

Let’s face it–It’s hard being single. What’s even more challenging is being single and having geek proclivities. Like genuinely loving comic book conventions. Or, thinking one of the selling points of going to Las Vegas is the Star Trek Experience (which, by the way, was awesome).

Now, I am a little new on the dating scene here, and have surfed some of the common dating sites [for friends and my adorable single brother, I swear]. I’ve looked at Match.com, eHarmony.com, and the primarily East Indian community based, Shaadi.com.

With ultra-hot models in their ads, I can’t help but feel a bit alienated. Sure, Rajiv from Boston seems like a nice guy, but will he be into light saber duels at dusk? I would rather have a site that’s based on attractive brains than fake veneered smiles.

Alas, there is a solution for my fellow gamer friends, and an alternative to getting a World of Worldcraft widow. Why not find a girlfriend who’s into that stuff just as much as you are? That is practically the mission statement of the site aptly titled Sweet on Geeks.

Sweet on Geeks is a site which works to unite tech savvy boys with gadget loving gals. The profile layouts are a bit different from the typical dating site. Geek passions aside, the member pages look a lot like those on Myspace, making it feel very familiar to any avid social networker. I am guessing they did that intentionally–the site is aiming to be the mother ship for all single self-proclaimed nerds.

So, before you sign up for another year of membership at one of those conventional sites, I would consider the relatively affordable Sweet on Geeks. It’s the price of a #5 at Burger King per month, and surely a shot at love is worth that much.

Besides, a Star Trek movie-a-thon with a sig-O can be awesome. Just make sure to skip the first DVD (not a fan of the original, sorry).

First, you are a natural at blogging, and I am enjoying your posts. Second, although I would guess you would meet tons of eligible geek guys in the part of the country in which you live, I have a lot of friends who have had a lot of success in the online dating scene. I am glad I met my wife the old fashioned way (in college), but I think that geek culture dating sites are pretty cool.

By the way, do you have any plans to host any of the segments on CNET TV? I know you are mostly behind the scenes, but I think you would do a great job in front of the camera.

Your best guy friends are probably all secretly in love with you, but think you’re out of their league… Namely, Kevin Rose ;) You guys ever cross paths when you were interning?

Work is always a tough place to find love… I should know — (interning at http://www.coudal.com) I’ve been chasing Jason Fried at 37s around for months and he still doesn’t call me back. lol.

btw thanks for the friend accept on pownce - you’re like totally way more popular than me, and rightly so — look at that smile :)

I would give these sites a go. In this day and age people are prepared to relocate to find their true love. If your true love is a geek girl living at the other side of the country, or even the world, nothing is impossible these days.
Geek dating has always been difficult, hopefully finding a geek girlfriend will be easier.
