New Pownce jumps ahead of Twitter
Pownce recently rolled out some new features, taking the next step into social-network file and information sharing.
With personal experience, I have found that many of my messages get buried. There have been a number of times where I have received private pings and have no clue. I only come to discover them if I am, A. re-pinged; or B. I go Pownce raking [look through the last few pages when I have some time to spare]. The updated Preference tab attempts to address this issue. Basically, you can set filters so you can view replies to your posts or private to you. The only problem is that you have to go into the Preferences page every time you want to switch from filter to filter. I would prefer some differentiating color/text font coding or tab option instead.
In addition, Pownce is making sure that I never miss a clam bake again. The events are now singled out in the top right column, making it easier to view events posted by others. Broadening the social network from Pownce has also been simplified. Links to your Myspace, Facebook, Linkedin, and even Twitter [to name a few] pages now appear on the left column for all your fellow Powncers to stalk…ahem…”check out.”
For what they are, these new tweaks not only deliver a deeper user experience, but serve to differentiate Pownce from similar mini-blog site, Twitter. Along those lines, the most significant change is the addition of inline video embedding from You Tube, Google, and more. This attribute keeps the user on the Pownce page, and enriches the visual interactivity within the site; it is one less external window.
Though I may have been slow at catching on to Pownce, I now have found many reasons to appreciate it. I may Twitter more frequently, but I feel my Pownce posts often require more thought and consideration. I love my current emo pink theme and hope that they offer more backgrounds and further customization flexibility soon. It would also be nice to see full sized pics of fellow Powncers, instead of a 1 x 1 box. What changes would you like to see implemented?

I had no idea any of this was going on with Pownce. Like everyone, I clamored for an invite, then tried to find reasons to use it. I still haven’t really latched on, but I didn’t like Twitter for the longest time either, and now you can’t shut me up there. (by the way, Neha, I’m akelatal on Twitter, and following you. That’s how I found this entry. I’d love for you to add me back!)
I’ll give Pownce another try. Let’s see if it sticks for a change.
Yup, I’m lovin’ the new features too! Hope you’re having a good long weekend and I hope you’re out of your emo mood!
Personally i think Pownce is evolving “the right way”, even if i’m still using more twitter. Both miss something to alert on private stuff- Tweetr2 (AIR version of twitter) developer promised to implement a glowing icons system on the next release. Events and links to other social networks give “a plus” to Pownce which help you to know a little about your friends :-) Embedding of videos and pictures is a nice feature, but it was not something essential for me.
+1 on Neha’s suggestions, but i’m waiting for the release of the Pownce API to create an AIR app. that will be able to “follow and post” on both Twitter and Pownce.
I think Pownce suffers from being the middle child between Twitter and MySpace. I like Twitter for its brevity and lack of clutter. I use MySpace when I want to really know what’s new with my friends (photos, videos, e-mail). Pownce does serve either function well — it’s like all the clutter of MySpace with only a little more functionality than Twitter (and minus the ease of using it over SMS).
I’m sticking it out with Pownce, but the new changes haven’t really made it useful for me yet. I only really use it once a week or so and only when I want to share a video or file with friends (which I could more easily do on my own blog). It doesn’t feel very social to me yet.
I think you’re right on the money: pownce has definitely moved ahead of both twitter _and_ jaiku with these latest enhancements. When SMS updates are added, I think it will cement itself as my #1 client.
I am looking at more mobile integration on Pownce with compatibility with Indian mobile networks.. and I am so loving Pownce… it is so cool!!
It would be nice if they made the themes customizable. Other than that I really like pownce. It’s like a twitter and a tumblr rolled into one. I’m having trouble getting my friends to use it, though.
I couldn’t understand some parts of this article New Pownce jumps ahead of Twitter!, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.
