Sony's recycling regime
Friday, August 17, 2007 at 09:43PM If you have an old Sony Playstation sitting around gathering dust, this piece of information may help you out.
Starting on September 15, Sony plans on launching a free recycling program in the United States. Anything containing a Sony brand (from old Vaio's to Walkman's), can be dumped in an environment friendly way. Approximately 75 WM Recycle America locations throughout the United States have been established so far, with Sony promising to expand the effort in the coming year.
By Sony paving the way for proper waste management, I can't help but wonder why more tech giants do not have similar programs. Sure Dell takes back their stuff, as well as Apple (for a fee), but shouldn't there be more? Going green is the hippest thing in tech since wireless, so why the limited resources?
I am hoping it's just a matter of time until computer manufacturers realize their one day obsolete machine will be contributing to the Earths landfill issue. Meanwhile, three cheers to Sony!

It would be great - if a bit out of character - for Sony to do something like this. It seems recently that everything they've chosen to do left Sony fans scratching their heads... rootkits? 'sploding batteries? ...mylo? the world's most expensive console game system? They're overdue a good decision.
I hope they're getting back on track to the cool, cutting edge behavior they grew their rep on. Even if they're going green because it's the new black - and just doing it to be cool, it's still a good thing to do.
I commute to work by train, and train tracks tend to run behind all the buildings with their glossy fronts. Urban train riders see all the ugliness of modern society, the drums of goo behind the factory, the giant landfills (kind of like huge geo-blemishes). I'm glad people are finally noticing. Even if they're doing it just to be cool. :)
Thanks for the blog. I enjoyed your work @ the old job and look forward to see where you land next.
Apple recycles for free.
"Recycle your stuff. Free.
Got an old computer, iPod, or mobile phone you're not using anymore? Recycle it with Apple — at no charge. All you have to do is pack up your equipment, print a label, and drop it in the mail. We'll take care of the rest."
it's because of planned obsolescence.
as a software designer i understand but it makes me mad.
it's done on purpose. here SONY blankly profit from p. o.,
but they would never eliminate it completely.
