Great talent no longer ensures job security

In this downward spiral of a market, it seems that no one is safe. You can be the shining faces of a network, but that does not guarantee you will have a spot on next weeks lineup. You can be exceptionally talented at what you do, but still, there is no refuge.

I found out a few hours ago that many of my esteemed former colleagues were let go at Revision3. Being someone who worked closely with each and everyone of these people, I am shocked and saddened. Sarah Lane is the queen of tech programming, someone who I thought would have been the last gal standing. Heather, Moujan, Brett, and many of the other members of the popSiren crew were brilliant. Many of my former team members are not only talented, but genuinely good people who would add to any company.

I know that there are business reasons as far as why this took place, but it never is an easy thing to swallow. popSiren was a show I helped build, and to see it go is very much like knowing you will never see a good friend again. I know that many of you who read this blog discovered me on Revision3, and know that you too must be confused and upset. Please use this as a forum to sound off your feelings.

I am still crying. I would pay money to watch these shows. These talented people will find jobs in no time though.

this freaking sucks. i really wouldnt have thought that a show like popsiren was even at risk of being canceled. to be honest, i think the digg reel sucks, and the only time i ever enjoyed watching it was when sarah and martin hosted it, so i think if anything that show shouldve gotten the axe before this one.

its a real bummer, and maybe im just bitter, but i wish revision3 would just get their shit together and stay with a solid lineup.

it sucks... Martin and Sarah are like old friends... 50% of my rev3 content was canceled today... sad.

I think they made all the wrong moves. I understand letting WLTV and EpicFu go since they will live on. But PopSiren, Internet Superstar and PixelPerfect will sadly be missed. IMO they let all the wrong shows go. There are other crap shows on Rev3 that deserve to go. Sarah Lane will, Im sure, be scooped up immediately. She was the biggest surprise since she produces most of the shows. They should have let the viewers decide by putting a poll on their page or something. Bad moves, Rev3, bad moves.

I imagine Rev3's schizophrenic management had much more to do with this than any economic spiral. I'll really only miss Sarah, since Neha already left. But, I do wish the best for all.

Pretty gutless move by the Revision 3 leadership. Hopefully they can find something at CNET or ZDTV if they want to continue with net broadcasting.

Ironically I had a dream that I started Nerd TV and it was a real TV sensation. Maybe one day..

Neha, when you first left Rev3, I was upset. Really upset. But, I didn't think that this would happen. Now I'm really upset again. Your headline couldn't be more right. Talent DOESN'T ensure job security. Otherwise, some of the other dreck would have been cut, and not the core of the quality.

Here's to hoping that the future is bright for all of the ex Rev3 staff when it comes to jobs in this economic disaster filled holiday season.

I really am sad panda right now...

I have to agree with the sentiments of many of you here. I still am jilted by what happened today, and in many ways, it made me re-live the moment I was let go by Revision3. I can truly feel their pain and know the thoughts they must be having. I talked to Sarah today, and true to form, she remains positive. Heather is doing fine as well, and as always is open to change. The popSiren women are resilient; I know they will be okay. The rest of the folks that I worked closely with and that I have known since I interned at TechTv are too talented to stay free agents for long. Thanks for your thoughts, and feel thankful if you have a job tonite. I know I do.

Why would anyone be shocked that they laid people off? It sucks, but it shouldn't be surprising.

What's surprising to me is the decisions on who they've let go of. The faces in the tech niche are few, and there's a hard-to-quantify value in the star power of some of these folks. If online video is going to be anything like broadcast TV, it has to understand that you need to retain the faces or see their audiences go with them. Belmont has certainly demonstrated that.

With everyone else who works entirely behind the camera, it's even less stable. People like Neha and Sarah Lane have a certain advantage in that they can do both, but for every kid who shoots and edits, there are ten more graduating from college wanting to do the same thing. It's the very same reality that the broadcast world has faced for decades, and when it's ad supported, you have to expect the same thing when the economy takes a dump.

The online video industry wants to be different from broadcast, but you can't ignore it and pretend that there's nothing to learn from it.

There isn't a lot of start-up capital available these days, but there is still an opportunity, regardless. Perhaps this time it won't come from the valley, but elsewhere, where it doesn't cost two grand to rend a tiny apartment.

Shocking news for everyone involved, I still cant belive they let Sarah go, She was the last person i would have expected to go.

If money is such an issue, i dont know why they dont just charge a subscription to watch Rev3, i would easily pay £10 a moth for quality Tech/Geek programing.

Keep ya heads up
